Our Services
Legionella Risk Assessment
It is a Legal requirement of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 to assess the risks of exposure to Legionella bacteria in a property. At Polhawn Water Solutions our Legionella risk assessments provide businesses with comprehensive evaluations of their water systems to ensure compliance with ACOP L8, HSG274 and HTM04-01 (where appropriate) standards, safeguarding against the risk of Legionnaires’ disease and Legionellosis. Our risk assessments are completed in line with British Standard BS8580 by senior members of the Water Management Society holding over 20 years’ experience in Legionella risk assessment and are tailored to identify and assess Legionella risks in various water systems, including cooling towers/evaporative condensers, hot and cold water systems including cold water storage tanks, hot water cylinders and domestic plumbing systems.
Our Legionella risk assessment reports have been designed to assist our clients in achieving full compliance with relevant legislation and guidance and thereby identify, eliminate and control risks associated with Legionella bacteria. Our reports provide all our findings in a format which is simple, quick and easy to read and understand with a clearly defined action plan setting out what risks have been identified and the recommended solutions to each risk. Each recommended action is provided a priority rating to assist the end user in prioritising and allocating their focus, attention and resources accordingly.
We serve a wide range of industries, from commercial properties and healthcare facilities to hospitality venues, educational institutions, manufacturing plants, and residential buildings. Our risk assessments include inspection of all plant and equipment, appraisal of key control parameters and all associated documentation and routine maintenance records to ensure a comprehensive written control scheme is present and effectively implemented. With tailored recommendations and full compliance support, our services enable clients to manage Legionella risks effectively, protect public health, and meet legal requirements across various high-risk sectors.
Training
Legislation and guidance relevant to Legionella control emphases the importance of ensuring all staff, including contractors, are suitably trained and competent to perform their designated duties safely and effectively. At Polhawn Water Solutions our Legionella Awareness and Role of the Responsible Person Training services empower organisations and individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage Legionella control in water systems, ensuring ACOP L8 and HSG274 compliance. Our training courses are ideal for duty holders, facility managers, and those designated as the Responsible Person within an organisation as well as individuals involved in ongoing routine maintenance tasks such as site engineers. Our training courses cover topics including a background to Legionella bacteria and associated illnesses, the causal chain which can lead to illness, factors which can increase the risk of bacterial growth and dissemination in a water system, legal requirements with regard to Legionella control, written control scheme content and routine maintenance requirements. Trainees learn how to implement and oversee Legionella management plans, including regular testing and monitoring, system maintenance, and record-keeping to meet legal requirements. Offered both on-site and virtually, our training courses prepare our delegates to manage Legionella risks across various industries, including healthcare, hospitality, education, industrial sites, and commercial properties.
Water System Auditing
Our Water Safety Audit Services offer a thorough review of water systems to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and minimize risks associated with Legionella and other waterborne pathogens. Conducted by senior members of the Water Management Society holding over 20 years’ experience in the industry, our audits examine the condition and management of hot and cold water systems, cooling towers/evaporative condensers, cold water storage tanks, hot water storage cylinders and domestic plumbing networks. Our audits are intended to review the condition of a water system and progress made in terms of improving compliance and reducing risk since the most recent Legionella risk assessment. This service is most beneficial to larger, higher risk or more complex sites as well as those with ongoing concerns and enables building owners and managers to closely review and monitor progress and improvement in Legionella control and can be undertaken at a frequency to suit the needs of the client. Our audit findings are provided in a detailed report with actionable recommendations to enhance water safety management practices, support ACOP L8 and HSG274 compliance, and help clients develop a robust Legionella control plan which addresses site-specific risks.
Written Control Schemes and Water Safety Plans
Our Legionella Written Control Scheme and Water Safety Plan services provide businesses with a comprehensive framework to manage and control Legionella risks in their water systems. In line with ACOP L8, HSG274 and HTM04-01 (where appropriate) guidelines, we develop bespoke, site-specific control schemes that outline the necessary measures for identifying, assessing, and controlling Legionella risks in all water system types including cooling towers/evaporative condensers and hot and cold water systems including those incorporating cold water storage tanks, hot water storage cylinders and domestic plumbing networks. These services are undertaken by senior members of the Water Management Society holding over 20 years’ experience in the industry and are entirely bespoke and client/site specific and tailored to meet the needs of the client by defining water hygiene procedures, setting up temperature monitoring protocols, establishing cleaning and disinfection schedules, and assigning responsibilities for Legionella management. We also ensure the plan includes comprehensive record-keeping to demonstrate compliance with legal requirements. Tailored to meet the needs of industries such as healthcare, education, hospitality, manufacturing, and commercial properties, our Written Control Schemes and Water Safety Plans help businesses protect public health, reduce the risk of Legionnaires’ disease, and maintain ongoing Legionella control in accordance with legal regulations and best practices.
Independent Consultancy
At Polhawn Water Solutions we provide Independent Legionella Control Consultancy services including Gap Analysis intended to offer businesses an unbiased, expert evaluation of their existing Legionella management practices to ensure full ACOP L8, HSG274 and HTM04-01 (where appropriate) compliance. Our consultancy services are undertaken by senior members of the Water Management Society holding over 20 years’ experience in the industry. As an independent provider, we are not tied to any specific products or maintenance companies, allowing us to offer impartial advice and solutions that best suit your needs. Our Legionella control services include reviewing your current written control schemes, water safety plans, risk assessments, and Legionella management strategies to identify areas for improvement, ensuring that your water systems — such as cooling towers/evaporative condensers and hot and cold water systems — are properly maintained and monitored for Legionella risks.
Our Gap Analysis Services are designed to assess your current practices against industry standards and regulations, identifying any gaps in your Legionella control procedures. We provide a detailed report with tailored recommendations to help you bridge these gaps and optimise your water hygiene management. Serving sectors like healthcare, hospitality, commercial buildings, and industrial sites, our independent consultancy services ensure that your business meets regulatory requirements, reduces the risk of Legionnaires’ disease, and enhances overall water safety management.
Microbiological Sampling
At Polhawn Water Solutions we provide comprehensive microbiological sampling services intended to monitor water quality in your systems and ensure the safety and quality of your water systems, helping you manage and control risks associated with Legionella bacteria and other waterborne pathogens in accordance with ACOP L8 and HSG274 guidelines. Our microbiological sampling services can be provided as a standalone service or alongside any of our other services including Legionella risk assessment, water system auditing and consultancy and can include sampling of hot and cold water systems, cooling towers/evaporative condensers, spa pools, hydrotherapy pools and other risk systems. Our sampling services adhere to relevant British Standards, including BS 7592 for Legionella sampling.
Samples are submitted to UKAS-accredited laboratories, ensuring accurate and reliable results. We can undertake system sampling for a range of microbiological parameters, including Legionella bacteria, total coliforms, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Total Viable Counts (TVC’s) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with detailed reporting including comprehensive advice on addressing any out of specification findings. Original lab produced certificates are provided to all clients.
