Your Legal Obligations:

Legionella bacteria is a potentially harmful pathogen best known for causing Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal illness. In the UK, employers and those in control of premises have a legal duty under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 and The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974  to minimise, manage and control the risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria for staff, visitors, contractors and other individuals in and around their premises. Specific guidance is provided by the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) ACOP L8 (Approved Code of Practice) and Technical guidance documents HSG274 Parts 1, 2 and 3 which outline compliance standards for Legionella risk assessments, water system maintenance, and regular monitoring. Under ACOP L8 and HSG274, responsible persons must conduct a Legionella risk assessment to identify potential risks within water systems including cooling towers, hot and cold water systems, spa pools/jacuzzis. If risks are identified a comprehensive control regime must be implemented which focuses on managing water conditions to avoid those favourable to Legionella growth.
